His unwavering but firm policy stance has earned his allies and adversaries respect. He believes that "thinking locally, but acting nationally" is the best method to influence culture through the local church. Tony and his wife Lawana reside in Louisiana. They have three children and five grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter Holly Ranee Hunter, son Travis Lynn Hunter as well as his mother Lynda Phelps Hunter. Additionally, he leaves behind his sisters Ronahkaye Shrum, a.k.a. Mopsy and his nephews Zackary Hunter and Adrian Hunter.
